Gardening Update...

We have seven tomatoes growing right now...six hanging (hee, hee) and one that's starting to turn red, on a plant that we thought was hopeless...

And just to prove us wrong, just when we had given up on that hopeless plant, yet another surprise was thrown at us.

As for our zucchini and cucumbers...they're gone. They started to show signs that something was growing, then, all of a sudden, they literally disappeared. The plant is still there...but nothing is growing. I give up...

Our peach harvest...after the first branch broke, I harvested those peaches from that branch and made them into peach butter. Mmmm...delicious. Oh, and by the way, I found the culprit. Then, looks as if he brought his Mama back for more, because she ended up in the tree and basically split it down the middle. I was as far out on my patio as I could get blowing the air horn (what the 'experts' tell us to do when there's a bear around) to get her to leave, but she just looked at me as if saying, "yeah, right, you think that's going to scare me??!!" Well, she basically split the tree in half, and we're going to have to cut it down. But here's what I could salvage after hours of bear buffet-style meals... So sad, my poor tree!! We still have another that's not yet ready to harvest, though. Hopefully they stay out of that one!!

Harvest Time...Well, almost!

I just had to snap a picture of our view this morning. Isn't God good?
"You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance" (Psalm 65:11).

One of our peach trees has been looking so, well, "peachy" lately. I check just about every other day to see if it's ready for picking, but they haven't been "just right" yet. Peaches that are ripe for the picking are softer to the touch (but not squishy), peachy scented, and easily picked off the tree. One of the trees...no where near ready. The other...a beautiful peach color, but still a little firm and difficult to pull off the branches. With all of the rain and cooler weather earlier in the summer, I think they need another week or two.

Well, this morning I found that one of the branches was broken...from one of the daily bear visitors, no doubt. So I had to pick at least this branch before they went rotten.

While not "ripe" for eating whole right now, I'll throw some in a paper bag to soften them up a bit and make preserves and peach butter out of the rest. Round 1 in the peach harvesting scramble. (This is just from one branch...about 60 peaches!!)

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary (Part Deux)

...How is my garden growing??!!

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with these plants? Are they supposed to look like this? I have cucumber and zucchini in this contraption, and I see so many blooms...bloomin' new ones all day long...but no fruit!! Are the leaves/blooms supposed to be this yellow??

On the other hand...my tomatoes are coming along nicely! Even if I only have two growing!!

Mary, Mary Quite Contrary...

...My how your garden does hang??!!

Amy over at Finer Things always has great garden pictures, inspiration, and tips. I'm always curious as to how her plants are growing, since we both started gardening just this year. The only difference is she is able to actually have a garden. Ours has to hang. Off of the swingset... for right now. We may have to move it eventually to even higher ground.

Growing peaches...I'm good at that!! They'll be ready in about another week or two...

We have two peach trees, but because of our many unwelcomed neighbors, we either don't have a garden, have a container one that we can move into the garage (however, our garage door hasn't been a deterrent before), or use the Topsy Turvy. We chose the Topsy Turvy and they're working out pretty well! We had them hanging on Shepherds hooks, but they were being weighted down from the constant watering, so we hung them from the swingset. We planted a tomato plant in the tomato "turvy" and zucchini and cucumber plants in the strawberry one. (We were too late in acquiring our Turvy to grow strawberries...we'll try next year).

Both plants have sprouted many blooms, but no fruit. Amy has a great tip that may help with my tomatoes...I gave it a try today. Keep your fingers crossed!!
