Finer Things Friday- A New Freezer

I have been wanting a chest freezer for quite some time now. It's pretty much a necessity where we live, since we're 15 miles away from the nearest grocery store. And, for the just about five years we've lived here, I've always accepted the fact that it just wasn't in the budget. We would set aside a small amount I would (secretly) earmark for a freezer, then something else would come up...another oil delivery, our snowblower dying, or a new garage door. I've been searching craigslist and the classifieds to no avail...they were either sold, too expensive, or so not worth it.
The other night at Lowes my husband ended up in front of the freezers, looked at me and said, "Pick one out".
You didn't have to tell me twice...what a great surprise! Simple things get me excited...if you told me ten years ago that I would be ecstatic about a deep freezer I'd think you were nuts! Well, here I am and I couldn't be more thrilled!
My husband...he's just excited about being able to make ice again. Before, we never had the room!!

  1. You will love your freezer! I have one, too, and have to say it is one of the best frugal investments we ever made. It will pay for itself quickly in what you'll save by being able to 'stock up' on good buys!
The only thing I don't like is having to 'dig' for things, so I have two solutions. One is to get some plastic boxes with clamp-on lids. They are about the size of shoeboxes and have a handle. I keep my boneless chicken in one of them and pork in another. Both are a different color and are labelled on top. I need to get one for ground beef, too, LOL! This way, you just have to pull the whole thing out by the handle.
The other idea is to keep a freezer 'map.' I plot out where things are to make them easier to find. For example, I know there is a tray of eggplant parmigiana on the bottom. As you fill the freezer, it will become easy to forget what you have, so keeping inventory is very helpful!
Have fun with your new 'toy'!
