Over this past weekend my husband's coaching buddy was coming by to go over game film... so, I had to run down to the deli at the end of our road to grab some ice (don't get me started about paying for frozen water!) and soda. It's a Mom and Pop place that employs the local high school kids. I ran in wearing a long-sleeved "Week Under the Lights" tee-shirt from the high school, a pair of jeans, and my Uggs. It was a nasty night so my hair was straight, and flat... nothing special!! I got my things and went up to the register. The girl must've been new. We're in there often and I know most of the girls and vice-versa...they see me dragging in my kids and keeping them out of the rows of candy on the shelves under the register.
So... I got up to check out and the girl obviously saw my shirt, so she says "Oh, do you go to ______(name of the high school)?" I thought to myself...did she just say that?? So, I had to think quick and I jokingly said, "Yeah...I'm the senior with the crowsfeet!" She totally didn't get it because she said, "OMG...Yah...I've seen you there!" Okay...she did just say that!! Dumfounded, really, but quite flattered, I said really nicely, but seriously, "Sweetheart, I've been out of high school for, like 15 years or so...I'm Coach __________'s (our last name) wife. But thank you though!" She says, "Oh, I know him..." Then that was it. I got my things and was just about to run out the door and I hear, "Mrs. _____ (our last name)...I hope I look like you when I'm that old!" She had to say it....My response, " Oh....thaaaaaannks!!" (I think...)

Haha - I love those moments... it's especially sweet when I realize that the kid behind the register was one of the kids from my first preschool class... yeah... sweet... :)

ReplyDeleteWhat a compliment!!! I've been out of school for ten years and I STILL love it when I get carded for anything. It's the small things in life that make a difference :)
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome compliment...Congrats. I had a young gal at Bon-Ton say that to me a few months back and it made my day, thanks for reminding me!
