Nana's Magic Cookie Bars

I just love handwritten recipes...especially ones from my late grandmothers. It's like having a piece of them, right there in my little recipe book. So, I was thrilled when my mother found another stack of handwritten recipe cards from her mother, my beloved Nana. I had totally forgotten about these cookie bars she used to make, which were my and my one sisters absolute favorite!! (They always reminded me of Girl Scout cookies Samoas)

Ingredients:
1/2 C. butter
1 1/2 C. graham cracker crumbs
1 can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
1 package semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 can (or 1/2 C.) flaked coconut
1 C. chopped nuts (you can omit...or use nuts of your choice. When she did use nuts she used walnuts)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 ° (325° for glass dish).
In 13x9inch baking pan melt butter.
Sprinkle crumbs over butter; pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumbs.
Top evenly with remaining ingredients; press down
gently.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned.
Cool thoroughly before cutting.
Store loosely, covered, at room temperature.

  1. These look delicious. They look very similar to the cookies my mom used to call "7 Layer bars". They are scrumptious too!

  5. I love a cookie bar similar to this, but my favorite thing here... the handwritten recipe. Handwriting is nearly a lost art. How sad for us!
